No ship, ever, on any ocean, had been watched by the world with so much breathless interest as was the USS OREGON during her dramatic 68 day trip around South America. In miles traveled, in daily mileage made, in hazards faced and perils met, USS OREGON was the sensation of the age as she traveled through the Strait of Magellan, to became the “Bulldog of the Navy” at the battle of Santiago.. The ship was superbly built and gave tribute to American technology. In war, no American vessel ever served her country better. In peace, she showed the flag, trained thousands of naval officers and crewmen and was a floating historical museum. Except for the USS Constitution, no ship has been more revered and loved by the American people. USS OREGON died needlessly from misguided patriotism. The old war dog should have been aloud to live as an inspiration to future generations and not just as a few artifacts and her place in history.
